Opera Australia is on a mission to make opera more accessible. It’s offering hundreds of $35 tickets to under-35s for Edward Dick’s upcoming production of Puccini’s Tosca, a classic thriller centred around Napoleon’s invasion of Italy.
The production will be staged at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne – the first opera to ever be performed at the venue – from May 24 and at Sydney Opera House from June 25. Under-35s tickets for the Opera House have all been snapped up, but there are plenty of tickets left for the Melbourne performance, in A, B, C, D and E Reserve sections. Last year, Opera Australia found that almost 60 per cent of its audiences were first-timers to the opera.
Even if you don’t get your hands on the ultra-cheap tickets, Opera Australia is offering 15 per cent off most opera tickets to those under 35, just by registering online. (You can even bring a friend.) And there’ll likely be more $35 tickets for upcoming productions – this year, Opera Australia is putting on Il Trittico, Hamlet and more – plus exclusive meet-and-greets with opera artists and like-minded opera-lovers.

So, for those curious to experience opera, possibly for the first time, this program should provide a much more accessible pathway to the art form.”
