Artbar: Tomorrow – 20 Minutes into the Future at the MCA Australia
Artbar is MCA’s after-dark, 18+ event series with a roster of contemporary artist curators. For the first Artbar of 2024, the museum is pulling out all the stops.
Multidisciplinary artist and musician Serwah Attafuah curates this explosive edition of Artbar, happening on Friday May 17. Known for her surreal dreamscapes and recent success in the world of NFTs, Attafuah’s art frequently challenges stereotypes and expectations of Blackness and femininity – like her work Between This World & the Next, 2023-24 currently on display in the MCA’s 24th Biennale of Sydney exhibition which will be displayed on the night.
For Artbar: Tomorrow – 20 minutes into the future, Attafuah transforms the museum into a cyber wonderland with art, music and activations presented both virtually and in person inside the museum. Experimental duo Deepfaith (Daniel Stricker and Byron Spencer) bring their psychedelic, techno-utopian pop to the museum’s rooftop, death metal band Dispossessed, while Bristol-based rapper, musician and game designer Llainwire performs via interactive play.
Elsewhere, visitors can experience South African photographer Pieter Hugo’s Permanent Error project, a video and sculptural work by local artist Kal Dhir (Slim Set), plus Troy Innocent and Dale Nason’s Cyber Dada Manifesto, resurrected from the 1990s cyber art and rave scenes especially for the occasion. And over in the Artbar Metaverse, drop in to interact with virtual attendees from all around the world and view digital works from Serwah Attafuah, Pieter Hugo and more.
